Bahrain gratuity calculations: service, salary and SIO

Confirm coverage, service dates and the salary basis before using a half-month or full-month gratuity formula.

Start with coverage and the service timeline

SIO’s gratuity system applies to non-Bahraini private-sector employees covered by the employment-injury insurance branch and took effect on 1 March 2024. Earlier service remains a separate employer-liability question.

Establish the employee’s start date with the employer and the covered periods. Do not restart service at the SIO implementation date for every calculation or charge both systems for the same period.

Understand the salary and benefit basis

SIO describes a benefit of fifteen days’ salary for each of the first three years and one month for each subsequent year. Its stated basis includes basic salary and social allowance, if any, excluding other allowances and benefits.

Article 116 addresses leaving indemnity for workers outside the Social Insurance Law and proportional entitlement for part-years. Article 47 sets the relevant salary basis and special averaging treatment for certain variable-pay arrangements. Establish which provision applies before inserting a gross-pay figure.

An illustration is not the final payable amount

If the applicable monthly salary basis were BD600 and exactly five complete years were assessed under the half-month/full-month pattern, the arithmetic would be 3 × BD300 plus 2 × BD600, giving BD2,100.

That illustration does not identify how much is payable by SIO or by the employer, account for prior payments, determine a disputed salary basis, or include wages, leave or termination compensation. Those inputs require a separate reconciliation.

Reconcile contributions and benefits

SIO’s monthly employer contribution is 4.2% for the first three years and 8.4% thereafter. A contribution percentage and a final benefit formula are different measures; neither should be silently substituted for the other.

  • Check the registered salary and service record with SIO.
  • Separate the employer’s earlier-service amount from the SIO-covered period.
  • Retain evidence of any previous payment or adjustment.
  • Ask for a line-by-line explanation if the statement and your records differ.
