What should overseas founders decide first?
Start with the proposed business activity and shareholders. Bahrain requirements depend on the activity, legal form and applicant details. Foreign-ownership permissions must be checked for the chosen activity; a country of residence alone does not settle eligibility.
Separate three facts in your enquiry: each founder’s nationality, current country of residence and the country that issued each document. A UK resident may hold documents issued elsewhere, and a company shareholder needs different preparation from an individual founder.
- Describe the products or services you intend to sell.
- State whether shareholders will be individuals, companies or both.
- Ask for the application-specific document list before paying for certification or translation.

UK: which documents can the Legalisation Office handle?
The UK Legalisation Office checks eligible UK documents before attaching an apostille. Examples include documents issued by public registries such as Companies House. Other documents may first need certification by a UK notary or solicitor. The office does not legalise documents issued outside the UK.
Before ordering, ask the receiving authority whether it needs an original or certified copy, a paper apostille or an e-Apostille, and whether documents must be legalised individually. Do not assume an electronic option will be accepted for every Bahrain application.
- For a UK corporate shareholder, identify the issuing registry and the exact company documents requested.
- For a document issued in another country, check that country’s authentication route even if you live in the UK.

US: is the document federal or state-issued?
The issuing authority determines where to seek authentication. The US Department of State handles eligible federal documents; state-issued documents follow the relevant state authority’s process. Start by identifying who issued the document, rather than sending every document to one federal office.
For federal documents, follow the Department of State’s requirements for an original or certified copy, official signature and seal. Its guidance says not to notarise an original federal document. For state business records, check the issuing state’s requirements and confirm the form of document requested for your Bahrain application.
- Record the issuing state for company-registration documents.
- Confirm the receiving authority’s requirements before ordering certified copies or arranging notarisation.

India: can your document use eSanad?
The Ministry of External Affairs’ eSanad service supports verification and attestation or apostille of eligible Indian-issued documents, including personal, educational and commercial documents. Online availability depends on the document-issuing authority and digital records integrated with the service.
Coverage is being introduced in phases. A document that is not available through an integrated digital repository may require the applicable offline procedure. Check the official portal for your particular document before assuming the entire process can be completed online or from abroad.
- Identify the Indian authority that issued each requested document.
- Check whether that document and issuing authority are supported by eSanad.
- Confirm the required original, copy and translation format with the receiving authority.

China: which authority issues the apostille?
For mainland Chinese public documents within the Convention’s scope, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and authorised local foreign-affairs offices are the competent authorities. A local office’s authority is limited to its jurisdiction. The HCCH directory provides the official authority details.
Chinese government guidance explains the apostille route for Chinese-issued public documents intended for use in other Convention countries. Establish the issuing jurisdiction before applying: mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao have distinct arrangements. Do not assume that residence in one place determines the route for a document issued elsewhere.
- Identify the issuing authority and jurisdiction for each company or personal document requested.
- Check the competent authority’s current procedure before ordering notarisation or translation.
- Ask the Bahrain recipient to confirm the required document format and language.

Does an apostille settle every document requirement?
An apostille authenticates a public document’s origin within the Convention’s scope. It does not approve a company formation application or establish that the document’s contents meet every receiving authority’s requirement.
Bahrain is listed in the HCCH Convention status table. Check the current status and scope for the issuing country, and separately confirm requirements for certified copies, translation and the underlying document. Do not pay to apostille every document before you know which ones are required.

How should you plan costs, timing and a visit?
Request an itemised quote after describing your activity, shareholders and documents. Ask which government charges, professional services, document preparation and follow-up work are included. The scope of an enquiry should be clear before you decide to proceed.
Treat travel permission separately from company setup. Check the official Bahrain eVisa portal for your circumstances before making travel commitments. BahrainAgent is a private advisory business; an enquiry or payment does not guarantee a visa decision or entry.
- Share your intended activity, founder details and document-issuing countries.
- List any desired travel date as a planning preference, not an assumed approval deadline.
- Use the official eVisa portal to review the relevant application requirements.
